How to care for your skin after a facial

Facials are a great way to maintain healthy skin and prevent aging.

The multi-step skin treatment includes cleansing, exfoliating and steaming the skin, as well as an extraction to clear clogged pores.

But just as essential? Proper post-facial care.

“It is important to get on a good skin care regimen in order to extend the benefits of a facial,” said Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center.

She suggests using a serum containing an antioxidant such as Vitamin C. The ingredient protects skin from free radical breakdown.

“Vitamin C should be applied in the morning to protect your skin during the day,” Malinowski said.

She also recommends a product with hyaluronic acid as an ingredient.

“It helps keep the skin hydrated and plumps it up,” she said.

At night, use a product containing retinol which increases cellular turnover.

“That helps prevent fine lines and keep the skin tone even,” Malinowski said.

For those who have battled hyperpigmentation in the form of melasma or photodamage, consider adding hydroquinone to your night time retinol.

“This will help even out the complexion,” Malinowski said.

Post-facial care should also include the application of an SPF, or sun protection factor, sunscreen of at least 30.

“SPF daily is a must,” Malinowski said. “It can be used in a moisturizer or makeup but when out in direct sun it must be reapplied every couple hours.”

For great post-facial skin, make sure your regimen includes these key properties.

And don’t forget to schedule your next appointment with an Eterna MedSpa esthetician. Regular facials are recommended every four to six weeks to keep skin looking young and feeling healthy.
