3 Things your Esthetician would like you to know.

3 things your esthetician wants you to know:

Is your skin in need of some TLC? Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, said to keep these three things in mind when it comes to caring for the body's largest organ:

1. Not all products are created equal

There are different strengths of products. Pharmaceuticals, sold by med spas and physicians, are the strongest and most effective as they mainly contain active ingredients including Retin-a, hydroquinone and adapalene, among others. Second in line are cosmeceuticals, which are also effective and sometimes even similar to pharmaceuticals, though they contain lower strengths of the active ingredients. Both of those products can be purchased by estheticians and cosmetologists. Retail products, which can be found at local drugstores or department stores, come up third. “The active ingredients are mostly fluff and not as effective as those that are pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical,” Malinowski said. “The better products are most effective and work faster.”

2. SPF and Vitamin C should be worn daily

These days, sunscreens have become more effective, some even containing ingredients that help to protect heat-induced hyperpigmentation, which can be brought on from a variety of heat sources. “Chefs, factory workers, etc., can get hyperpigmentation through working in hot environments,” Malinowski said. “As with any SPF reapply, reapply, reapply.” Vitamin C protects skin from free radical damage. “Which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles,” said Malinowski.

3. An esthetician can show you the ropes

A good skin care regimen, including a cleanser, Vitamin C serum, hydrator and SPF, is key. “Most people have no idea what they are putting on their skin and have no idea what they need for different conditions of the skin,” said Malinowski. “For those that have hyperpigmentation, dehydration or acne a good regimen can make all the difference in the world.” Another tip? “Do not use Dial soap on your skin,” Malinowski said. “That’s a big no-no.”
