What to know about sagging skin.

Sagging skin is an unfortunate reality most people will have to deal with at one point or another. Here are three things to know about it, including causes, prevention and ways to tighten loose skin:

1. Causes

A number of factors can contribute to loose skin. As part of the natural aging process, for instance, skin begins to produce less collagen and elastin, both which give the skin its natural elasticity and keep it firm. Sun exposure can also affect the skin’s elasticity and collagen production, but at a faster rate than aging. Other factors can include weight loss, smoking, and poor nutrition, among others.

2. Prevention

Since sun damage is one of the top causes of premature aging, it’s imperative to use an SPF sunscreen daily all year round, and avoid direct sun exposure especially during midday hours. Smoking is another major cause of premature aging so if you do smoke, stop.

3. Treatment

Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center offers Sciton SkinTyte, a broadband light treatment that stimulates collagen production by deeply heating the existing dermal collagen, restoring elasticity to sagging skin. The three-step process cools the skin before, during and after each light pulse, keeping the patient comfortable during the treatment. The healing process is quick, you can return to work or other activities without any recovery time. SkinTyte™ is safe for all skin types including tanned skin. The most common areas to treat are the face, neck, abdomen, arms, knees and buttocks. A series of treatments is recommended for the best results.

But, notes Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, SkinTyte “only works when you are on the cusp of losing your laxity.”

“It won’t work on anyone who has already lost their laxity,” she said. “They would need a surgical procedure like a facelift.”
